"I began this research over two years ago, believing the subject to address issues that were of fundamental concern to me throughout me architectural education and internship experience. Recently a number of new and encouraging examples of comprehensive integration of environmental issues into architectural coursework have emerged across the country. Still, I have found that many of the most exciting learning opportunities in the field of ecological and enviromentally responsible design and construction are found outside of conventional architectural education - in places that reach a more diverse community of learners - places where often the teaching approach is more directly related to actual, built projects. In updating and expanding this article, it is my renewed wish to hold the work of these places in the light, and to contribute to the ever-growing network of individuals and groups seeking sustainable solutions to the age-old problem of building in the environment. - Sandra Leibowitz, a graduate of the University of Oregon's Master of Architecture program
