Freestone Residence

This off-the-grid residence for a young couple is located on a  site in western Sonoma County.  The reflects some of the rural vernacular vocabulary of the region, with its low profile and corrugated metal roof.  It features extensive shaded walkways on the south, as well as a shaded patio on the north for summer use.

The structure is gently tucked into the hill on the north side, and a green roof helps connect the house further to its site.  The residence features in-slab radiant heating and is oriented and designed so as to receive beneficial  winter sun in the living spaces, while the utility and service rooms serve as buffer space on the north side.

A garage/guest house in the style of a barn, and an extensive organic garden, orchard and pond complete the site.
